Apple getting more market share pie

Ah, remember the good ol' days when the Mac had some 2% of the U.S. PC market share?

I remember. It sucked. PC weenies constantly pointing at that number like it was some sort of divine evidence of the Mac's inherent inferiority to the majestic and dominant Windows-powered beige box.

Well, we've come a long way since the days of one-hand market share figures. The Mothership points to preliminary data from market research firm NPD, which shows the Mac's share accounting for 14% of all PC retail sales. AppleInsider sums it up:

The results -- first revealed in an investor note from Pacific Crest Securities analyst Andy Hargreaves on Monday -- represent 60 percent unit growth and 67 percent revenue growth over the same period one year ago. At the same time, overall US PC retail shipments grew just 9 percent on a 5 percent increase in revenues.

According to my own preliminary research data, surveying my friends, people I see at the library and Starbucks, and the imaginary people in the my head, Mac market share is actually a lot higher: 230%, +/- 200%. It's still amazing to see how many people actually own MacBooks/Pros relative to all the other PC notebooks, especially considering the Mac's position in the market a few years ago.

Check the AppleInsider article for more numbers and a cool blue chart, and the Macworld piece for more deets on the Mac's changing place in the market.

Fit Dad Fat Dad

The title of this post is “Fit Dad Fat Dad” partially in honor of Rich Dad Poor Dad and partially to stir up some controversy in exactly the same way as RDPD does.

RDPD has a fairly poor reputation amongst pf bloggers. I think the reason is that it questions widely held beliefs on personal finance. The aim of RDPD is to get the reader to stop thinking like a middle class person and start thinking like a capitalist or an investor. This is about as hard as convincing a democrat to become a republican or vice-a-versa. Many readers completely miss this point and instead complain why RDPD does not contain lists of baby steps towards getting out of debt or big lists of 100 ways to save money out of which they can pick a handful and believe they are on their way to financial health. That is to say the complaint is that the book does not show how to become rich while thinking like a poor person.

Fit Dad Fat Dad follows the same prescription. I remember a dinner once where the conversation fell on the subject of calories. I was pointing out various parts of the meal explaining that the lettuce and vegetables were around 40-80kcal/100g while the dressing was around 600 and the bread was around 300, etc. Then one of the 220lbs guys commented that it was funny that I was the one knowing this when I was exactly the one who did not need to know this. This is similar to how people in shape are told that since they are so fit they don’t need to exercise. Of course the fact that in shape people exercise is exactly the reason why they don’t need to.
If I wrote a book I would have my fat dad personify the attitude that one loses weight by counting calories and taking small steps by cutting out the weekly ice cream while my “fit dad” would personify the attitude that eating the wrong kinds of food (taking on caloric debt) is simply bad for you. Since “fit dad” would know the true value of food, “fit dad” would subconsciously choose to eat healthy and in moderation. “Fat dad” would tend to value food according to what tastes good. Now counting calories works, but it is unlikely to work well until “fat dad” understands why he is counting calories, namely to see what is nutritious and what is detrimental. Similarly setting up a budget is not the end but only a means of understanding how some cash flows are good and some cash flows are bad.

When it comes to exercising fat dad sees the ripped abs and bulging biceps whereas fit dad sees the ability to do 200 situps or 30 pull ups. Fat dad sees exercise as a chore or at least something to be endured to reach his end goals of looking good. Fit dad sees exercise as a way of testing his limits and being physically capable. Looking good without a shirt on is merely a side-effect. Fat dads would stop exercising as soon as they have reached their goal of looking good. Fit dads would keep pushing. Hence, machines for easy abs in just 10 minutes and liposuction are for fat dads. Fat dads drive to the gym a couple of times a week and exercise for a bit on a recumbent while reading a magazine. The financial equivalent of fat dad is setting up automatic contributions to a 401k, forgetting about it, and going through the motions. The financial equivalent of fit dad is a focused search for high ROI opportunities whether they are found in the stock market, through cheaper insurance, or down at the supermarket.

Create a Network and Catapult Your Job Search

Create a Network and Catapult Your Job Search

Networking is still known as a great job-search strategy, yet it eludes some individuals simply because they don't know how to go about it. Individuals also tend to shy away from networking because it's time consuming. Unlike online résumé submission or folding a résumé, stuffing it in an envelope, and adhering a stamp, networking requires far more time and dedication. The results, however, can be quite different than those experienced from traditional résumé submission.

Your network incorporates everyone around you, such as your preacher, doctor, neighbors, friends, colleagues, and/or fellow committee members. The object is to talk, ask, brainstorm, and seek the assistance of others that know of an opportunity or contact that you do not. Have you heard of Stanley Milgrim's theory of 'Six Degrees of Separation' (more popularly known by the movie, starring Kevin Bacon)? His theory states that there are only 6 people separating you and someone you'd like to meet or get in touch with, such as a hiring or human resources manager.

Like anything critical in your life, you must be prepared to network. Hold a small portfolio to house several prints of your résumé along with other pertinent material. Collect business cards from everyone you meet and make notation of the place and date on the card. This information is needed should you speak with this person again. You'll make an impression by referencing your previous conversation, along with the date and occasion (e.g. name of seminar or conference).

The card will also be handy when you're given a job lead. Generally the intro paragraph of a cover letter will reference something like, 'When I spoke to Sarah McNeil on August 1, 2002, she mentioned that you are looking for a clerk typist and suggested that I contact you.' Obtaining a person's card will keep you from misspelling the person's name and remind you of the person that gave you the lead. Effective networking will cause your card portfolio to fill up quickly and make it difficult for you to keep names and companies straight in your mind. BTW, don't forget to give your lead a small gift or handwritten thank-you card if you land the job. Small gestures, such as a job lead, can oftentimes be forgotten.

As I mentioned, networking takes time; but the results can be more rewarding than résumé blasting (sending your résumé to anyone, if not everyone). Steven R. Covey, author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, wrote, 'We have the initiative and the responsibility to make things happen.' This statement applies to everything in our lives, especially those affecting our careers. Networking (although time consuming) can change the entire face of our beings and open the door to more opportunities than we ever dreamed possible.

Even when employed, your network should be tended. Keep in touch with select individuals through thank-you cards and e-mails. Offer your services and knowledge to them should the opportunity arise - anything that will make his or her life easier.

I also recommend that you present individuals in your network with key opportunities that may come across your desk in the future. The best way to get is to first give. Give your acquaintances the chance to be quoted in an incoming article or book - or opt to purchase products or services from them. A $15 purchase will show that person that you care about their success.

Another great aspect of networking is to find new friends that will strengthen your network and challenge you to succeed. Within the first three months in business, I met two individuals that I associate with now four years later. One has a degree in journalism and is incredibly smart concerning the English language, and the other is a technical guru that I call immediately if I have trouble with one of my computers. Both are incredibly skilled in their fields, and ultimately make my business stronger because we each look out for the other. We talk, we negotiate, and we bounce ideas off each other. Now that's a network!

Tune in to college radio on iTunes radio

In my junior year of college, I thought I'd try my hand at being a college radio DJ. I mean, I listen to a ton of different music and college radio stations generally get to play whatever the hell they want, so it seemed like an ideal gig at the time.

It wasn't until I had invested a good number of volunteer hours organizing the school music library and subjecting myself to the company of elitist music snobs (this is Berkeley radio we're talking about) that it dawned on me: Who the hell actually listens to the radio anymore? Let alone college radio. That's right: no one. So I quit.

Thankfully, Apple is stepping up to save this dying breed of non-corporate music broadcasting by adding a "College Radio" section to iTunes's Radio offerings (that's in the sidebar, under Podcasts—if you don't see it right away, hit any of the disclosure triangles to force iTunes to refresh the list). For those of you who haven't given Internet radio a shot, I wholeheartedly suggest it as a great way to find new music. And now if you're ever hankering for a Kraftwerk '74-'78 marathon, or a 1980's Philip Glass Detroit House remix, you just might be able to catch it on one of these stations, even if Berkeley's KALX isn't on there yet.

Switched To Fee-Free ATM Withdrawals [Personal Finance]

I'm sick of paying ATM fees so I just finished switching to my USAA debit card for my cash money needs. They refund up to $15 of ATM fees per month and don't charge you any fees for using other people's ATMs. I'm still keeping my WaMu account but I took my WaMu debit card out of my wallet and just funded my USAA account with some money. Not that I have a problem but I think this will also help reduce petty cash spending. Plus, by using cash more often that means I'm getting more change, and all my coin change goes into my piggy bank (60% full at the moment, looking forward to the day I take it to the Commerce Bank "Penny Arcade" coin-counting machine). With the specter of a recession giving us all wet willies, are you making any changes to your personal finance system?

Katrina - What Its Like To Be An Evacuee

Katrina - What Its Like To Be An Evacuee by Rev. Michael Bresciani

With less than twenty four hours to go before hurricane Katrina hit land my wife and I started to pack up the car to leave St Bernard Parish Louisiana. We had to have the brakes repaired only an hour before we left. We had to depend on the kindness of a neighbor who was frantically working on the car as we loaded it with those things the officials said we should take with us.

We loaded a few changes of clothing our important papers and our dog, Patches. We went to pick up an older gentlemen whose daughter could not pick him up because she lived north of Lake Ponchartrain which was already nearly impassible. He was a member of our church and we faithfully picked him up for every service because he could hardly walk on his own. Looking back now we know he would not be alive if we had not gone to get him out of his house.

We drove through the night. At first we could not go over fifteen miles an hour across the twin spans, an eight mile long bridge across the lake a bridge that today is largely destroyed. The winds came just behind us only hours later and washed the spans that weigh thousands of tons into the water like toothpicks in a bathtub. In time we got up to about fifty but not once did we ever reach the speed limit. We arrived at a friends house near Birmingham Alabama where we stayed for two days. We contacted the old gents family and arranged for his family to come and pick him up. The power went out several times throughout the second night as the winds gusted and threatened Old Birmingham.

On the third day only hours after Katrina had moved above Jackson Mississippi did we began the 450 mile trek to my wife?s sisters house in West Baton Rouge Parish. We listened to the radio reports with some measure of hope that all was not that bad. Our hearts began to sink as hour by hour reports came in about broken levees and rising waters.

Over the next two weeks we followed all the news reports and searched for friends and pictures from our neighborhood on the internet. During the first week it was totally impossible to get a call through to anywhere from Alabama to East Texas. It was a long dark moment of knowing nothing at all about anyone or anything we ever knew.

The news began to trickle in slowly but none of it was good. We saw pictures of our neighborhood with water up to the roofs. We slowly got reports from people we knew who were scattered all across the country in places they had gone to take refuge. Some of them said they would never return.

Next came reports and pictures of toxic laden mud through out our Parish and talk of houses that needed to be bulldozed into the ground that was said to be uninhabitable. Rescues of people, animals and the retrieving of bodies went on with all the pictures being shown daily on Baton Rouge TV stations. If things weren?t glum enough then we began the business of trying to call FEMA and Red Cross.

My wife must have dialed FEMA over 500 times before getting through. Then we were promised a packet in the mail after they took our information. We have still not reached the Red Cross and they are still talking about gathering 40,000 volunteers to help answer the phones. The insurance company that covered our house informed us that their coverage would cover our house only and no more but they are not sure they can do anything without seeing the house. But no one is seeing our house not even us. The St. Bernard Parish President Junior Rodrigues held a news conference in the capitol building here last night and spoke of months before residents could return, not weeks. Only hours before this bad news came in we went to get shots to protect us from a host of diseases that we could get if and when we do return.

Our bank accounts were not accessible and money doesn?t grow on trees even in this fertile Mississippi valley so I thought I?d make an appeal on my own little one page website. Now we feel as if we are caught between the warnings people are hearing about fraudulent sites collecting for Red Cross and other organizations and indifference. No one as yet has responded to the appeal but then only 35 or 40 people a day click on my site.

My wife volunteered her help in feeding some 200 people in a shelter here. She helped prepare the food and serve it. The food was provided by a small Baptist church in Erwinville Louisiana. Later we visited the people in the shelter and are continuing to do so when we are not knocking our heads on the wall in the biggest communications nightmare in the history of the telephone. We asked one family if there was something we could get for them in the shelter, they asked for a bible. We purchased it the next day and delivered it to them in person. That warmed us greatly, not the giving of the bible but the request for it. Unlike stories out of the Superdome this was a wonderful family of black Americans that had a different set of values. And thousands like them are suffering and waiting to begin their lives again, just as we are.

We have had several invitations to go and live with family and friends in other towns and in other states but we are staying close to New Orleans to attempt a look see and to retrieve what we can. So far all we are hearing is ?stay away? and of course the endless buzzing of the busy signal from the aid organizations.

We are a praying couple, and when we talk to Jesus we are sure he is saying, I love you and I will take care of it all. We believe Him and we are very grateful that his line was not busy.

Rev Michael Bresciani is the author of ?An American Prophet and His Message? and ?Hook Line and Sinker or What Has Your Church Been Teaching You? He has written many articles in print and online. His website is, http://americanprophet.org

Recycle your old iPod for free via USPS

Got an old iPod you've been meaning to get rid of? Don't can it just yet; the U.S. Postal Service has announced a new pilot program that will make it easier for people to discard used or obsolete small electronics in an eco-friendly, ahem, "green", way. The "Mail Back" program, launched on Monday, works like this:

You mozy down to your local Post Office, grab a free, special envelope in which to enclose your broken or obsolete iPod, PDA, or other small electronic (larger items like laptops don't seem to be eligible), and mail it away—free of charge. Postage is covered by Clover Technologies Group, a company that recycles, remanufactures, and remarkets inkjet cartridges, laser cartridges, and small electronics.

The pilot is set for 10 areas across the country, including Washington, D.C., Chicago, LA, and San Diego, but if all goes well, this could become a national program.

Watchlists

WATCHLISTS....The Washington Post reports on our burgeoning watchlist mania:

One man went into a Glen Burnie, Md., Toyota dealership to buy a car, only to be told that a name check revealed he was on a U.S. Treasury Department watchlist of suspected terrorists and drug dealers. He had to be "checked for tattoos," he said, to make sure he wasn't the suspect.

....Yesterday's court-ordered release of documents to the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area, offers a window into the kinds of disruptions suffered by those ensnared in the process, as well as the difficulty of clearing their names.

....Thomas R. Burke, lead counsel in the group's FOIA case, said he suspected the watchlist is causing problems for many more people than revealed by the cases so far. Moreover, he asserted, "There isn't a program [of redress]. There isn't an ombudsman. There isn't a procedure to help consumers clear their names."

The Glen Burnie auto customer — whose name was redacted by the government to protect his privacy — began his quest for relief with the car dealer, according to the documents. The dealer referred him to the credit-reporting agencies, Experian and Equifax, but he was left in electronic voice-directory limbo, he said. That was only the beginning of "a revolving-door nightmare," he said.

This is possibly the most maddening aspect of our current watchlist frenzy. I understand the purpose of all these watchlists, and even though I don't like them much I get the fact that they're probably here to stay and are quite likely fairly effective. (Though I wouldn't mind hearing some evidence on that score.)

But why the insane refusal to set up a system that allows innocent people to get off our various and sundry watchlists? You can chalk this up to normal government inefficiency if you want, but it obviously goes way beyond that. It's plain that the agencies involved don't want to let people off, whether they're innocent or not. The mere ability to challenge your inclusion on a watchlist is a threat to them.

This is crazy. Maybe some conservative group needs to adopt this as a takings issue. They could probably figure out a way if they wanted to. They might even get a few liberals to sign up with them.
